Mencari Syifa’ dan Syurga dalam Ujian

Assalamualaikum anak-anak Mama sayang...

From Lincoln to Putrajaya | The Postcard That Crossed 163 Years

Image
Hello, friends and fellow history wanderers! Welcome back to another episode of ‘What did the postman bring today?’ For most people, checking the mailbox is a mundane chore. You walk out to the gate, open the metal box, and usually find disappointment. Maybe it is a bill you forgot to pay. Maybe it is a flyer for a pizza promotion or a brochure for a loan shark. It is rarely exciting. But for me, the mailbox is a portal. It is a gateway to the rest of the world. I have a daily ritual. Every evening, I check my postbox with a little bit of hope. And on December 5th, 2025, that hope turned into pure joy. It was a ‘Jackpot Day.’ Not one, not two, but four postcards arrived at the same time! Two came all the way from Germany, one from the sunny state of California, and one very special card arrived from Bay City, Michigan, USA. While all of them were beautiful, the one from Michigan stopped me in my tracks. It wasn't just a pretty picture of a sunset or a cat. It was a ...

Postcrossing Salt Lake City | Studio Ghibli, Trolley Square & Malaysian Anime

Image
Hello, my dear readers! It was a beautiful Tuesday afternoon (September 9, 2025), and as usual, I was checking my mailbox, hoping for something exciting. You know the feeling, right? Usually, it’s just a sad-looking advertisement for a new hypermarket. But that day? That day was different. There was a splash of color. A stiff, rectangular piece of joy that had traveled all the way from the other side of the world. I flipped it over and saw the stamp from USA. Specifically, Salt Lake City, Utah. It had taken its sweet time to get here (the postmark said August!), but that just makes it more special. It’s ‘snail mail’ for a reason. It didn't fly here in an email; it took a boat, a plane, a truck and maybe a postman in an electric van to reach my hand here in Malaysia. The Treasure | A Ghibli Masterpiece Let’s talk about the picture on the card. If you are an Anime fan, your heart just skipped a beat. It’s a scene from Studio Ghibli’s movie, The Wind Rises (or in Japan...

Seagull vs Crow: What a Quirky Florida Postcard Taught Me

Image
In a world filled with instant pings, DMs, and disappearing video calls, there's a special kind of magic in the thud of a physical piece of mail landing in your letterbox. It's a joy you can actually hold. And yesterday, November 14, 2025, I got one of those joys... all the way from Tampa, Florida, USA. It wasn’t a bill. It wasn’t a flyer. It was a postcard. But this wasn't just any postcard. This was a hand-painted, character-filled piece of art that came with a dad joke so wonderfully cheesy it made me grin all by myself. The star of the show? A ‘lil' sea bird’ drawn with intentional ‘quirkiness.’ As someone who loves the stories behind things, I couldn't just leave it at that. This postcard was begging to be unpacked. So, let’s unravel the story of this well-traveled piece of cardboard, and how it accidentally sent me on a journey from the beaches of Florida to the mamak stalls of Kuala Lumpur. The Mailbox Magic Let's play detective for a m...

California Gold Rush Postcard | And Bau, Sarawak's Own Gold Rush

Hello, my dear readers! It was a beautiful Friday afternoon (November 14, 2025), and as usual, I was checking my mailbox, hoping for something more exciting than utility bills. And guess what? The mailbox was smiling! Tucked inside was this gorgeous postcard. It wasn't just any postcard; it was a map. And not just any map... it was California's 175th Birthday Party printed on a piece of cardboard! This colorful piece of mail came all the way from San Francisco, California, USA, sent by a lovely lady named Susan. Now, let's do what we do best here at Canon Rider. Let's grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and deep dive into the stories hidden in this 6x4 inch piece of paper. The Sender | A Penpal Adventure! Before we even look at the front, let's appreciate the back. This is the human connection, the heart of Postcrossing. Susan’s handwriting is so cheerful! She wrote: "Mawar, Greetings from San Francisco, California! Did you have a nice ...

From Japan with Bugs | Wasps, Stag Beetles & Borneo

There is a special kind of magic in hearing the thud of mail landing in your postbox. In our world of instant DMs and ‘seen’ receipts, getting a physical piece of mail... something someone actually touched, wrote on and sent across an ocean... feels like a small miracle. This is why I love Postcrossing . On November 8th, a small, rectangular miracle arrived from Kobe, Japan. I saw the postmark and the beautiful stamps (more on those later) and got excited. Kobe! The land of legendary beef, scenic mountains and a beautiful port. I flipped it over, ready to see a picture of Kobe Tower or perhaps the Arima Onsen. What I saw instead was... bugs. Specifically, ‘MINNESOTA HYMENOPTERA, Plate 1.’ I laughed out loud. This is the absolute chaotic, wonderful joy of Postcrossing. You never, ever know what you're going to get. The Sender, The City and The Crime Novel Let's look at the (human) side of the card first. The message was from a lovely Postcrosser named Midor...

The Painted Churches of Moldavia | A Surprising Link to the Malaccan Sultanate

Image
Foto: Cosmin Gavris (Pexels) Hello! As you know, I’m always looking for a story. A good photo, for me, isn't just about the ‘f-stop’ or the ‘golden hour.’ It’s about the story trapped inside the frame. The other day, I was idly flipping through the Slowly app, and a single screen stopped me in my tracks. It showed a place called the ‘Churches of Moldavia’ in Romania. At first glance, they look beautiful, but ancient. Old stone, tall spires... classic Eastern European. But then you look closer. The entire outside of the churches is covered in complex paintings, called frescoes. This isn't just a little mural over the door. We're talking about massive, detailed, ground-to-roof masterpieces. The churches date from the 15th and 16th centuries, and most of the frescoes were painted in the 16th century. The app's description was fascinating. It called them "masterpieces inspired by Byzantine art," "authentic and particularly well preserved,"...

From Metz to Malacca | A French Chapel, the Templars and 1511

Hello my wonderful friend, I've always believed a camera is more than just a tool. It's like a passport that lets you travel, or even a time machine. But sometimes, a big trip starts with something small, like a simple postcard. I'm part of a group called Postcrossing . We send and get postcards from random people all over the world. It's a wonderful way to share cultures. Today, I got a card in my mailbox from Metz, France . It was a simple black-and-white photo of a building I didn't know. The building was nice, but also... strange. It wasn't a huge church. It was small, strong, and looked almost like it was hiding a secret. It had a special eight-sided shape and a very steep roof. My friend's note on the back was short: "Im from Metz, France!" That ‘Metz’ made me very curious. I did some research and found out it wasn't just a city with an old church. The old chapel itself was part of a Knights Templar base. And that story is d...

Waibaidu Bridge, Shanghai | The 'Grandpa' Bridge in Front of Pudong

Hello my wonderful friends! Guess what? On the very same day, Sept 30, 2025, that the happy fish party postcard arrived, another paper treasure popped into my mailbox! Double Alhamdulillah! This one also travelled a long, long way, all the way from China! Thank you, Postcrossing friend! A Wobbly, Wonderful Drawing This postcard is super special too! Just like the fishy one, it is not a photograph. It is a drawing, a sketch! It looks like someone sat down with a pen and some watery colours and quickly drew a picture of a busy city place. The lines are a little bit wiggly, the colours are soft... it feels alive and moving! Like the artist drew it super fast to capture a happy moment! What did the artist draw? Wow! There is a very long, strong-looking bridge made of metal criss-crosses, like a giant Meccano toy! It goes across some dark, wiggly water. There are even little boats floating on the water! Chug chug! And peeking behind the bridge... oh my goodness! There are...
